Weekly Vocabulary
Vocabulary tests are given each Friday unless otherwise noted.
1. foggy - filled with thick mist or low clouds. "On foggy days, thick mist makes it hard to see. Drivers must go slowly." 2. stretch - to spread out. "Bridges may stretch over land or run across large bodies of water." 3. crew - a group of people doing work. "A crew, or group of workers, has just started to build a new bridge." 4. balancing - keeping steady. "Workers must be good at balancing on high, thin beams without falling." 5. tide - the rise and fall of the sea. "When the sea falls at low tide, it's a good time to make repairs to a bridge." 6. excitement - the feeling of being stirred up. "Marathon runners feel excitement as they cross the bridge. It is a thrill!" 7. disappears - passes from sight. "Half of the bridge disappears in the foto. It seems to vanish in the fog." 8. cling - to hold tightly to something. "Painters cling to the bridge when the wind blows. They hold on tightly!"

"Many groups have bake sales to raise needed money." 4. figure - to work out by thinking. "Many schools figure out ways to reuse paper instead of throwing it away." 5. contacted - got in touch with someone. "The girl contacted neighbors by phone and asked for help with projects." 6. customers - people who buy something at a store. "Some store owners ask customers to donate a dollar to charity." 7. afford - to be able to pay. "Kids collect toys for families who can't afford to buy them." 8. earn - to get something by working. "The students are trying to earn enough to help buy new library books." |
